What is 5G home Wifi/broadband, and how does it work?
You probably get Wifi at home either through the main Wifi router, Wifi extenders, or nodes (if you have a Mesh Wifi system) or through a direct wired connection like ethernet cables or fibre. Many internet service providers deliver home internet service via phone lines or cables — coaxial cable, fibre-optic internet — which are all wired connections from the provider to your home.
5G Wifi delivers internet to your home through a wireless connection. It provides internet access from a 5G tower and works by incorporating 5G technology into a Wifi set-up rather than a mobile phone. The “5G Wifi router” then emits Wifi signals, allowing devices to connect to it just like standard broadband routers.
How is this possible? Well, you know that 5G smartphones are able to connect to the internet using 5G SIM cards, right? The same technology is applied to 5G home routers, essentially mobile broadband routers, and they are fitted with 5G SIM cards, which send out Wifi signals for devices to connect to.
For a successful 5G Wifi connection, your provider will need to install an outdoor/indoor 5G receiver at your home/office to help pick up the 5G signals.
5GHZ and 5G: What’s the difference?
One common misunderstanding is seeing “5GHz” on Wifi routers and assuming you have access to 5G. 5GHz or 5 gigahertz is actually a short-range radio frequency and is one of the bandwidth options for your home’s Wifi system along with 2.4 GHz. There are many prominent advantages of opting for 5G home Wifi over your typical cable (coaxial or fibre-optic) internet connection.
